Running the Race with Gratitude, Perseverance, Hope, and Faith – Sprint I

Have you ever wondered what God’s plan truly is for your life? I know I have—more times than I can count. And interestingly, those questions never seemed to appear when life felt easy or joyful. Instead, they surfaced when things were hard, messy, or uncertain. Isn’t that often the way it goes? When life is smooth, we rarely pause to ask why. But when challenges come, the “why” rises to the surface and refuses to be ignored.

There’s a beautiful promise in Isaiah 40:29: He gives power to the faint, abundant strength to the weak. These words remind us that even when we feel empty or worn down, God meets us with the strength we cannot produce on our own.

My name is Sindhya Layola. I grew up in a small, coastal village called Adimalathura in Kerala, India. Today, I live in North Carolina with my family, miles away from my childhood home but still deeply connected to it. This was me before the memories began, but the journey had already started.

One of my earliest memories still makes me smile. As a preschooler, I used to ride the public bus to school. One day, I missed my stop and found myself completely lost. The bus driver, unsure what to do with a tiny child who didn’t know where she belonged, took me straight to the local police station. And that’s where the magic happened: I was suddenly surrounded by what felt like mountains of candy. The officers, trying to keep me calm until they found my parents, kept handing me chocolates. For me, it felt like an American Halloween—except I didn’t have to knock on a single door. I’m still grateful for that moment of unexpected sweetness and even more grateful that my parents were found the very same day.

Life since then has carried its own mix of sweetness and struggle. And this blog series—an eight-sprint journey—is about a very particular “race” I began running in January 2024. It’s a race that’s physical, spiritual, and emotional. One that demands endurance, deep faith, and unwavering hope. That race became even more real, more vivid, and more urgent after receiving a firm diagnosis in August 2025.

Along the way, I reached out to three remarkable women—each of whom has walked, or is still walking, a version of this same journey. Their stories intersected with mine during different seasons of my life:

  • Patti Conforti, whom I met during my first IT job after moving to North Carolina in 1999
  • Jennifer McIntyre, my neighbor in 2003 when I bought my first home
  • Devika Washington, a friend I met in 2007 when our children attended preschool together

Their wisdom, courage, and faith—and the way God gently wove our paths together—have shaped the race I’m running today. And now, I’m inviting you to run alongside me, one chapter at a time.

Thank you for standing with me at the starting line.

Stay tuned for Sprint II, where I’ll share more about this journey—and yes, the story behind the cake picture.
